Meet The Team

Co-Project Manager // 4th Year // SE Major

In freshman year, I first joined Concrete Canoe because it was by far the most quirky out of all the project teams. I started as a junior lead in the Mix Design team and really enjoyed the hands-on aspect of the engineering process. Whether it was paddling practice or long hours of concrete pour, I’ve made so many memories that have made Concrete Canoe a highlight in my college experience. One thing led to another and now I am leading the team as a co-project manager, where I strive to push for the success of the UCSD Concrete Canoe team and reestablish its reputation as a full-fledged project team.

I joined Concrete Canoe because I wanted to be a part of a project team that tackles unique problems. I started as a construction junior lead and soon learned that I liked communicating logistics between subteams so I decided to work my way up into a project management position. Even though I enjoy solving the problems this club has produced I am more thankful that it has provided me with a community that I feel safe with. The people I have come to befriend through Concrete Canoe have been some of the brightest and most motivated people I’ve ever met.

I actually joined Concrete Canoe by mistake. I started off college on a different team but quit due to burnout. I believed that I would never join a project team again, but here I am, a hypocrite. I was convinced by my friends to go to the Concrete Canoe Pour Day and the rest was history. The leadership team tries their best to create a wholesome and inviting environment for everyone because above all, we are a group of friends that tries our best to make a sick ass canoe every year.

The fun atmosphere and intrigue of building a canoe out of student-designed concrete was what influenced me to join Concrete Canoe. I’ve worked under the Mix Design team for the past couple of years and it’s been such a memorable experience meeting new friends and learning more than I ever expected about concrete. Although this year will be my last in the club, I’m glad to be a part of a team that consists of such great students and community!

I was initially drawn in by the contradictory nature of making a canoe out of concrete, and I viewed it as a fun challenge. After attending a few meetings it became clear that beyond providing learning and growth opportunities, it was a place to find community.

During my freshman year, I was interested in joining a project team related to my major and was most interested in Concrete Canoe because it seemed the most fun. However, it took until my second year at UCSD to join and I immediately wondered why I didn’t join sooner. I was welcomed immediately and was able to help, learn, and make friends as the year progressed.

After trying out different clubs and teams, I found my home in Concrete Canoe because it felt like I belonged. At my first meeting, I got to make a fresh batch of concrete, along with some new friends. I later applied to be a junior construction lead to practice handling power tools, and look at me now!

I joined Concrete Canoe in my second year because I thought it was the most fun vibe of all the project teams. I also wanted a more hands-on experience of engineering and concrete canoe was my answer for that.

The summer before college I got obsessed with concrete so an entire club that endeavors to make a canoe out of the material sounded impossible and intriguing. Through this, I grew my appreciation for the versatility of the material that produces about half of the man-made world.

I wanted to join an engineering club that was unique and the idea of creating a working canoe out of concrete definitely intrigued me. After a couple of meetings, I found a great community of friends in Concrete Canoe and wanted to continue this as a lead.
