Welcome!
We are a collegiate organization under the Society of Civil and Structural Engineers (SCSE), a student-led organization associated with the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the Structural Engineers Association of San Diego (SEAOSD). As a project team of SCSE, we work to design, build, and race a 20-ft canoe made of concrete to participate in the annual
ASCE Concrete Canoe Competition.
A CHALLENGING PROJECT
Many people ask us: "Does it really float?" to which we answer "Yes! It does!"

Every year, our team is challenged to design and construct a new canoe from scratch. We strive to create lightweight, yet high-strength concrete according to a set of prescribed rules which govern the concrete mix. This is achieved by iterative design and testing- the fundamental cycle of engineering design. UCSD Concrete Canoe provides students with a unique opportunity to get hands-on experience to test their technical skills in concrete design and get involved in project management while being immersed in an active team environment.

Beyond the classroom
UCSD Concrete Canoe provides an opportunity to teach essential soft and technicals skills that are not taught in the classroom, including project management, material acquisition, and use of power tools. Members are given a chance to negotiate and network with companies and gain early exposure to the industry. Additionally, students can get an in-depth understanding of concrete design by being a part of the team, allowing them to excel in their structural engineering classes. Our team provides a well-rounded learning experience that develops relevant skills that are worth putting in your resume!
